ho-boy did that one cost me!
I'll try to shed some light, or hind-sight Harold,
You did EXACTLY what I did with the new check valve. In '90 they superseeded the return check valve with the supply one. UNDO this immediately. My car wouldn't restart after about 2 days of driving like this and the final culprit wasn't the pump. The pressure and lack of return had blown out the fpr and flooded the car (they also insisted on new fuel lines cuz I spliced and cut the old ones...liability). The pump was ok (for now...). I remember the mention that the replacement return fuel line has a built in check valve, but no one really knows if this is essential or superflous.
I don't know the purpose of the return line check valve - the SAAB document explaining the "running change" for the check valves states the supply check valve configuration is more consistent and better for proper, quick start ups. In the dealers parking lot I swapped the original supply fitting (non check valve) with the new supply check valve I incorrectly installed at the return line. This "should" have worked but the car was flooded and the fpr was shot.
The only problem I considered was that the fuel lines are that thin hard plastic material. When I first installed the incorrect check valve I cut the old one off with a hacksaw through the neck of the fitting. This provided a rigid insert to the fuel hose splice, but also left me without a non-check valve fitting.
Your plan is all you can really do at this point. If you have the time and a fuel pressure gauge, I would check the pressure when you've finished just to be safe.
Good luck- I still have a clear picture of this in my head so feel free to contact me with any questions.

'90 SPG - running like a new car....no more hesitation or bogging with the 3 bar fpr either (for all you low-cost tuners).
