The way I usually do it is to cut off the old belts first. This leaves no tension on anything. Then, I remove the tensioner adjusting bolt from the top of the alternator with a 17mm wrench. This allows the alternator to swing freely. THe lower boshing should allow you - with some resistance - to push the alternator towards the block.
Fit the belts as follows:
1) Inner belt on inner sheave on crank pulley
2) inner belt over alternator pulley to inner sheave
3) inner belt over water pump pulley to inner sheave.
Same order for outer belt. crank-alt-WP.
Doing the alternator last makes it a LOT harder to get on.
After they are on, loosen the adjusting nut on the adjuster bolt & re-insert the adjuster bolt in the alternator, making sure that the nut is in a position to tighten against the bracket.
Should be easy from here!
