1979-1993 & 94 Conv [Subscribe to Daily Digest] |
Oh, the dilemmas...
I've just found (what I think to be) a pristine 1993 turbo. It seems to have been meticulously maintained, driven carefully with regard to the turbo, and the seller is ready to give it up now that it has over 100k miles. That, and the fact that he has a 9-5, an Audi A4, and a Porsche 911, so there's no room left...
It's a 3 door, 5 speed, 106.5k car with everything intact and working. The price is even right for the vintage--$5000 obo. The only hitch that I can see is that it is in Illinois and I'm in Maine. And my sights on getting the car suddenly run up against a steep, sharp wall.
I'm currently a student and really can't take the time off or spend the money to take a 1000 mile trip to make sure this car is really as good as the guy says and find out that its junk and return home without the bacon, as they say. I've got pictures of the exterior and interior (looks flawless, no cracks in the dash, even), and I've gotten multiple e-mails which form a relatively good picture of the car. To all the questions, he has responded just how I wanted (which could be a bad thing, ... but I'm banking on good-nature..). The owner's also had two 900 turbos previous to this, so I presume that he has some experience with them, is an enthusiast, and took good care--and according to what he's written to me, I think that this is a truthful perception.
Does anyone have any advice? Does this sound like a good deal (disregarding the distance and considering only the car)?
I've been considering ways to get the car checked out--and all I can come up with are A) pay a mechanic to check it out for an hour or B) get a SaabNet person to take an hour out of his/her weekend and check the car out for me. In fact, I'd much rather have a SaabNetter do this because... well, I'm not sure. Perhaps its the principle of it.
Doesn't this seem like not only a good idea, but a way to get another Saab person's trustworthy opinion? After reading and posting for over a year now, I think that the expertise and devotion that you all display are amazing. I've also noticed the camaraderie and the helpful nature that most everyone exhibits in trying to help others. It seems only natural that this is where I would turn for help!
Thoughts, comments, ideas on both the car itself and primarily getting it checked out without necessitating my travel to Chicago?
Thanks,
Tim B.
