My '92 smelled of gas (inside) too - the source of the problem was a busted nipple on the plastic filler tube housing - a rubber hose should carry overspill out through a hole in the well of the trunk below the filler tube but if the nipple is broken the gas goes right into the well. I just filled the hole in the exterior of the housing (in front of the gas cap) with some epoxy.
I found the car still smelled of gas (outside) when the tank was full and realized one day when I backed down the car on our sloping driveway that the gas was leaking out through the top of the tank around either the sender unit or the fuel pump. I haven't gotten around to replacing either seal yet but I'm armed with Permatex 'Hylomar HPF' flange sealant (gasoline resistant) for when I do.
Good luck.
