Nat,
No, I didn't have to remove the springs. Since it is made of a think rubber/plastic all you have to do is fold it in half, lengthwise and push it in from the bottom. Very simple. After that you connect the vacume line to the airbags. Get a hand full of tie-wraps and run it to the rear-bumper. Pretty easy stuff. The car did not rub. I had three adults in the back plus a trunk full of luggage and it was fine. I highly recommend them. It only cost $100. I got it from a company called SAS.
