The only problems I've had in the 5 years i've owned my '97 900SET is the clutch and main seal. The car has been flawless otherwise since then as far as reliability is concerned.
I will say however that since I've tuned it to 235+/- hp, the handling is no where near as good as the C900 in stock form. I've since added the Abbott Viggen Rescue Kit (combination of stressbars, poly bushings and steering rack brace), Abbott lowering springs and SAS rear swaybar. The car is now a go-kart and really hugs the road. It is a shame that the VRK is not a standard item engineered from the factory and that it took a tuner to sort out the "torque steer" problem.
I love both the C900 and the NG (now with it's upgrades) but for very different reasons. The NG has a much more refined feel to it, the C900 much more "visceral". The NG will out accelerate the C900 any day of the week, but the C900 can carry much more than the NG ever could.
Love 'em both. And with the age of my '88 SPG, things are going to break. Lets face it: the last of the C900's are over 9 years old (excluding the '94 convertible). They're old, and things wear out with age. But if you maintain the vehicle faithfully, it will give you years and miles of smiles.
My last '88 (a 900S, prior to the current SPG) had over 305,000 miles on it when I sold it two years ago. I was the only owner until I sold it. Changed oil every 3000, changed coolant every other year, and fixed whatever broke or wore out immediately.
I hope to have the Talladega at least that long, and hope to keep the SPG a long time as well. A "rolling restoration" is in progress on the SPG as we speak. (Not a frame off, but fix or replace everything as time and money allow, and still keeping it drivable...).
Very different cars, but both a joy to drive IMHO.
