The comment about worn pinion bearings referred to old cars driven to the point of complete transmission failure- the dreaded screeching halt. I've never replaced only the pinion bearing when getting transmission work done.
During the last rebuild (10,000 miles ago), both the 3rd gear and the "laygear" were replaced. This is the part which meshes with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. I assume that this is the "cluster gear" you're referring to. The "layshaft" was also replaced because some bearings had worn into the shaft (kind of making their own raceway). All of the synchros were replaced, and some other stuff I can't recall offhand. The transmission shifted very smoothly and positively after the rebuild, but whined in 3rd under deceleration. I was told that the noise was OK, and would quiet down eventually- and it did quiet somewhat.
I've been seriously considering the purchase of an Eriksson unit.
