i'm fairly sure the rotating joint around the firewall is loose. look down near the pedals, it's right above the rubber boot, to see if this is the problem, wrap your hand around where the steering column and the shaft connect, then turn the wheel a bit. if it is loose fix it because i would think it's dangerous. hopefully this is it, because it's very easy to fix, just tighten the nut.
