If they picked up the back and towed it at normal traffic speeds (with the transmission in reverse), the engine would have over-reved. If so you would be looking at a bent valves and/or a broken cam. If the car starts, then this was not the case.
It is also possible that the engine braking was too much for the clutch, and the clutch started to slip. This would give you a burnt out clutch.
I can't imagine a scenario where the transmission itself would be damaged. The transmission can certainly handle the redline speed of the engine.
I would suggest you do a compression/leak down test on the engine, make sure the transmission oil does not smell burnt (might as well change it), and visually inspect the thickness of the clutch friction surface (viewport from above).
