I'm pretty sure the 88 has the same adjustments as older shift levers.
If you peel back the black accordion boot covering the base of the lever, there are 3 attachment bolts. As I recall, they are either hex or some other difficult to remove type fastener, but even lacking proper tools, they can be removed. Naturally having the proper tool is best.
Anyway, once you remove the retaining bracket, you can pull the whole shifter assy out. There is a tapered rod coming out of the bottom of the shift lever, below the plastic half-spheres. Anyway, I believe there is a pin in the lever. If you remove the pin and unthread the tapered rod, you can get the reverse gear lockout working properly. Sounds like you need to thread the tapered rod out a little. You will see how the mechanism works, when the pin is in the shaft: When you pull up on the reverse engagement ring, the tapered rod retracts into the shaft.
Anyway, hope this makes sense, I believe that this is the only adjustment you need to make. Thread the center tapered rod out a little, re-insert the pin, and put everything back together and test.
Of course, you could have some other problem, but this is probably the best place to start.
