I can't help you with the mechanic.

Basic maintainence to get your car working well in the heat should not be difficult if you did not destroy the engine. If you shut the engine off before there was damage, maybe you are ok.

Maybe the steam simply came from an overflowing expansion tank. This is the container with the cap. For one thing, the seal on the cap could be blown.

This is your first item to purchase. Very simple operation. Go to the saab dealer and buy the pressure cap for the expansion tank. You will find that they probably give you a new yellow (unless this has been superceded) cap to replace your old obsolete cap. Around 10 bucks.

2. Buy a thermostat while you are there, a little under $30. You must buy a saab thermostat, do not let some yahoo overcharging mechanic put in some 2 way thermostat

you can easily replace the pressure cap yourself, and replacing the thermostat is a piece of cake, if you have some tools and a little time.

Rolf

--And Yes, get your car the hell out of wherever it is. Does it run? You don't need cooling fans to drive your car. Just don't sit with the engine running. Only when the thermoswitch in upper left radiator signals, do the fans even run at all. This mechanic of yours probably hasn't even tried bridging the two contacts with a screwdriver. Get car OUT NOW.

Ok.
