Last year sometime, I was driving down a familiar road, not really paying the greatest amount of attention to potential changes in the roadway.
I swung around a corner and there was a brand new curb where there used to be a flat shoulder.
Anyway -- I ended up sort of banging my poor 1986 900S off of the curb, on the right tires. I scored up both of the rims on the right side fairly well, but not too badly.
The worst part is that my rear axle is actually offset to the left by oh... less than an inch, but it's too much! I realized last night that I can't fit my wider summer tires on the rear without severe (IE: tire no turn) rubbing. Actually, with the rear jacked up, there's a little rubbing on the right rear, but not with the car settled on the suspension, with my snow tires, which are 185/65 15. The summer tires are 205/55 15, so they are about 2cm overall wider, and that does it for the clearance.
What should I do?
Can I go to mom and pop's auto body shop and have them hydraulic jack the axle back over to the right a little? I'm thinking sort of, it can't hurt all that bad, or can it? Heck, I suppose I could use my own 4 ton floor jack, if I could find a sturdy concrete bunker to reinforce the car against.
But realistically, I am guessing I might need to get a whole new used rear axle from a junkyard and replace everything.
I'm just looking for opinions.
The 900S has no suspension at all -- say compared to my SPG, and tires make ALL the difference in handling and fun. I'm so sick of these Nokian hak-1's that I could spit. I don't want to roll all over the road anymore when turning, that's for winter!
Thanks for any suggestions and input.
