how quickly they forget...

The whole secret to removing an old O2 sensor is in taking the thing off when it's mad hot.
You see, the exhaust elbow is cast aluminum, whereas the threaded sensor is some sort of low-grade steel. These metals have different coefficients of expansion, and when the elbow is cold, it basically shrinks down onto the threads of the sensor, making it =almost= impossible to remove.
Many a hapless do-it-yourselfer has struggled with a stubborn sensor, then in exasperation drove to a Saab shop and watched in amazement as the mech calmly reached in with a wrench and socket and unscrewed the sensor with one pull. That's because by the time you drive to your friendly mech, the exhaust elbow is nice and hot.
I took mine out cold a couple of summers ago, and it was a real epic weekend. I'll see if I can find the post and put the link on here for you. Amusing reading, if you haven't seen it already.
If you don't want to do it the way I did, try this method:
1. Drive the car. Get the exhaust pipe mad hot.
2. Stop and pull out the battery. Don't burn yourself.
3. Take out the old sensor. Don't burn yourself again.
4. Wait for things to cool down for an hour or two.
5. Put the new one in, using anti-seize on the threads.
