Same advice for leaking hose connections apply also to any and all gaskets along the coolant curcuit. Especially the thermostat/housing. A leak along there is difficult to isolate mainly because any coolant leaking there doesn't pool anywhere and quickly evaporates. And it has some surface areas that are difficult to eyeball. As far as the long drive conditions causing more leakage than city driving - heat has a lot to do with such leaks because it causes expansion. Because of the design of the cooling system, on a long drive the coolant circulates through the engine proper and not so much through the heater core circuit. This is to keep the engine at the appropriate operating temperatures, which naturally decreases from the additional air flowing past it while driving 60+ mph. That further tells me that for the duration of the long drive a concentration of hot coolant flows through a specific area when exiting the engine on it's way to the radiator, or doesn't move at all when the thermostat closes for brief periods of time. That area may be the place which expands and contacts the most and caused the gasket to fail. I'll guess it's the thermostat housing area. The problem may also have been amplified if you drove for any extended length of time with a failed or failing thermostat causing extremes of temperature at that crucial place in the cooling circuit. Just a theory.
