It´s not a bad job. I did it some time ago. Everything was pretty much straightforward, only that I had to cut the black plastic air tunnel a bit to get centering spring mechanism fit in there. It´s a good idea to replace loose ignition lock (if you have such) at the same time.
There´s three triangular nuts on the mechanism, where you might need special too (I had one when I did mine, # 87 90 370) they look like to be quite hard to unscrew otherwise.
The result is more exact shifting than it was with the original tranny.
I had ´91 5spd, now older 4spd.
I don´t think that you´ll ruin anything without the centering spring,
but it would be a lot easier to drive with it!
