Neal,
Installing an aftermarket head unit in an OG Saab is surprisingly one of the easiest and most straightforward work that can be done on our cars. To remove the old radio, you should have a radio removal tool that came with the car, they look like 2 small 'U's made out of wire about the size of a coat hanger. If you don't have them, no big deal, you can make a pair out of a coat hanger. Stick each one in the holes on either side of the radio. This pops open the tabs that hold the radio in the dash. Come to think of it, I know some of the older Saabs had that system where you could physically pull out the radio to take it with you for theft prevention. If you can't see the two holes on each side of the radio, you might have that system. Then, remove the cage that held the radio. From there, you can either buy a harness adapter that will allow you to directly plug into the harness to adapt it to an aftermarket's wiring. Or, if you are cheap like me, and enjoy doing things the hard way, you can use a test light, and find your constant 12V+, switched 12V+, and ground. The speaker wires can be figured out by looking at the speakers themselves to figure out colors. I can't remember exactly what wires are what, I'm abroad right now and it's been 7 or 8 months since I've been behind the dash of my 88 900S. If I remember correctly, my sister's 90 Saab had a pamphlet that came with it when we bought it that was all about the factory radio, and told you which color wires were for what. Anyways, after you've got the wiring figured out, you simply slide the mounting tray that comes with your new cd player into the hole in the dash (it will fit w/out any modification), and bend all the tabs on it so it is securely mounted. Then plug in your harness, and slide in the cd player until it clicks in place.. Hope that helps!
Good luck!!
