Get a good rebuilt one and it should cost you around $250 give or take. Make sure it has a warranty and make sure you get it from or through the place that will do the work. I've got an 89 900S, and had that problem. I kept being told to replace AC system piece by piece. WHen you get the new compressor, you will also need to get a new receiver/dryer and one other part that looks like a coil. Warranty is key here, Amber. Make them warrant both the parts and the work, even if it's only for 6 months. You can save a few bucks from buying the compressor from a Saab place on the web, but when you have a local guy install it, if the system conks out, he'll say it's the compressor (which you bought elsewhere) and you'll have thrown away the labor costs, have to get ANOTHER compressor, and then pay all over again for the labor. I went through this. Paid over $1000 before it was all over. Also, have your mechanic convert the AC system from freon (very expensive) to the newer stuff. Conversion should cost around $130 or so plus refrigerant, which is MUCH cheaper than the $60/pound freon you'll need. Hope this makes sense...I'm very tired.
Good luck,
