I'm not the expert in this area, but I know the '88 had a water-cooled turbo. So if nothing else, you're going to have to do some fancy plumbing re-work. I'm also going to assume that there may also be some size (turbo capacity) issues.
Given the large number of '88 and later turbo cars running around, or not running, as the case may be, I'd recommend going for a replacement unit of the same type. Unless you are in the mood for a project or are looking to do it on the cheap, you'll have additional plumbing to do, and may end up with a less than satisfactory result.
