No...you can't use any old O-ring. Must use O-ring compatible with refrigerant and hose connectors...get the right ones from the Saab dealer.
And yes, you generally install the receiver/dryer before you suck and charge. You can duplicate the work of sucking/checking for leaks if you want to do the hose replacements independent of the receiver/dryer (helps if you have problems with the hoses/O-rings). OTOH, most people just install everything once...you'll to take the old hoses off the old receiver/dryer and it's probably better to mess with the hose connectors just once!
If you do it right/correctly, generally new hoses and receiver/dryers should install without leaks. Now, your old condenser and evaporator may be a different deal...make sure the condenser isn't holed (as well as the evaporator!!) and also be aware that breaking the line to the condenser may damage the condenser nipple, necessitating a new condenser (well, same thing could happen at the evaporator but generally they're not out in the mud and the blood and the beer so they're not generally as corroded as the condenser).
Since you're going this far...consider a smart orifice valve...NAPA sells them and here's the website:
