Sounds like a shifter alignment problem. I would get that checked out before you start worrying about a toasted transmission. i don't know if the procedure is the same for your 91, but on my 89, you put the shifter in 3rd gear, remove the rubber bellows right in front of the shifter, and stick a pin (screwdriver, awl, etc) down through the metal hole in the bracket over the shift rod, and down into the shift rod. Then go underneath the car (hope you don't mind grease!), and loosen the nut on the shift shaft behind the transmission. Make sure that your pin in the shifter is straight up and down, and then re-tighten the nut underneath the car.. Good luck! If I"m incorrect on the procedure for a 91, I'm sure someone on here will correct me and let you know the proper one.. :o)
