Look at what kinds of cars are being bought by younger drivers. Toyota and Mazda both have small, 5-door hatches targeted at drivers who want something that can haul stuff and friends, yet is fun to drive, unlike a SUV. Pontiac's Vibe also falls into this category. I can't quote you sales figures, but I see them frequently here in the Northwest. The hatchback is not a dead concept by far. It wouldn't surprise me to see Saab bring back the hatch in a few years to accomodate those current 20-something drivers who want to move up the automobile food chain, but have grown to appreciate the utility, fun and funkiness of a sporty hatchback.
Remember, if you had said in 1986 that in model year 2003, Saab would offer no hatchbacks in their model lineup, you would have been laughed off this board (did we have the Internet back then??? :) Trends in autos change over time. Hulking SUV sales are already beginning to slip. People are migrating back to cars. I predict Saab will bring back a hatchback 9-3 (or equivalent) within the next 5-7 years.
