If the crunch is gear clash, it is possible that the pilot bearing in your flywheel is binding or the clutch shaft is dry/rusty. Both of these problems will permit the clutch disk to contact the pressure plate or flywheel even when the clutch is disengaged. The cure is to replace the bearing and lube the shaft. Might as well replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, shaft seal, and slave while the patient is open.
If your clutch disengages down near the floor you could have air in the clutch hydraulic line or the hole in the pedal arm where the clutch master hooks up could be elongated. Solution here is to bleed clutch and/or repin pedal arm.
