Start the car, and place a meter's red lead on the positive terminal of the battery, and the black lead on the negative. Set the voltmeter to VOLTS. There should be a reading of 14 volts or more, up to 14.8 or so. If not, then the regulator in the alternator could be bad, or the alternator is bad.
If you do get 14 or so volts, set the meter to AMPs, remove the negative battery cable, place the red lead on the removed cable and the black lead on the battery terminal. If you see a reading of a few AMPs or more, then there is a short in the car somewhere. First, remove the wires from the back of the alternator. If the AMPs reading goes to zero, you have a faulty alternator. If not, then reattach the alternator wires, and remove each fuse in turn. When you have removed the fuse for the circuit with the short, you'll see the AMPs reading go to zero. Then track down the short in that circuit.
Also, check the ground strap from the alternator to the engine block, and the ground connections at the front crossmember under the radiator and just to the side of the battery. Clean these and reattach.
