and it cost me about $675. I shipped my car (roughly) from Austin, TX to Syracuse, NY.
Some advice for your friend:
Spend a few hours on the internet, there are several dozen major shippers that have websites. Stay away from the really shady looking ones though.
Basically, I took some time and got quotes from about 6 or 8 shippers. The quotes ranged from $600 to $1,200 - for more or less the same standard service, which is shipment on an open, double-deck carrier. If you want a closed carrier, or a single-level one (so fluids won't drip on to your car from other cars) then you'll pay a lot more.
Talk to the shippers when you get the quotes, ask questions. They have some pretty weird regulations and requirements some times. Make sure they are insured, and take a few photos of the outside of your vehicle right before you ship it in case they knock a dent in it or break a mirror off or something.
Also, sometimes you can work a deal with the price. If you are willing to either drop the car off or pick it up at a major shipping depot that the carrier operates out of, they might knock a significant amount off the price.
At the time, I considered flying out and driving the car back to NY from TX, but I decided against it. If you figure in the $$ for the plane ticket, hotels along the way, food, gas, etc it doesn't end up that much cheaper, unless you drive straight through and eat bread and water. ;) Plus, you have to factor in the loss of opportunity - flying out and driving means you've just dedicated a few days to transporting the car. For someone with a busy life, that might not be possible.
Expect the car to be *very* dirty when it arrives, it is a long and dusty trip! Give it a fresh coat of wax beforehand to help the dust come off easier afterwards.
