white smoke coming out of tailpipe....

I have a 87 SPG, and the other day the battery died, so I put a charge on it and then the next day when I went to start it up smoke white smoke started coming out the back. I've heard that this is a sign of the turbo failing. So I took a look at the turbo and smoke was coming off of it, almost as if oil was leaking out and burning off. On a hunch I thought that there might be too much oil in the engine and somehow it was getting past the seals in the turbo. SO I check my level and low and behold there was too much oil (about a 1/3" past the full line). I lent the car to a friend who was borrowing the car to drive about 200 miles away. I figure he must have checked the oil, found it low and added too much.
So here's the big question... Has the damage already been done to the point where if I drain some oil, the car is still going to smoke? Or is the turbo truly dead?
If the turbo is dead can anyone give me some cost estimates of replacing it?
Thanks,
Adrian
