Hi,
The coupler is located on the outside of the cabin. You can see it if you go under the car. You may not see it at first, unless you go through the gears. The power steering rack might be in the way. When you say it pops out of fifth, that can be be you shifter is out of alignment. The only way for it to go out of alignment is to have played with the coupler before, or the bumped hard from the back while driving with your hand on the shifter.
My car pops out of 5th becaused I played with the coupler when taking the engine out. That is a simple fixed. You stated that it pops grinds in 2nd. It seems to me a internal problem like worn synchos, gears. That fixed would only mean a new or rebuilt tranny. I don't mean to alarm you.
Good luck
Patrick
