Several (10-12) years ago I rebuilt my 82 900S 5 speed armed only with a Haynes manual! I did succeed, and it still works. I needed a new pinion, so did have to have that pressed on by a local mechanic, I replaced some other miscellaneous parts, including gears, etc. as I thought they looked bad, and I THINK I spent around $700. The parts came from a Saab mechanic in New Baltimore, VA - cheaper than dealer. One thing I learned here on SAABNET is to get the new, heavier pinion. If you tear this down, replace the pinion bearing even if not obviously bad. I spent a few weeks (nights) in a neighbor's garage (he was away for a while) and had the assembly hanging from a winch from the rafters! On reassembly, I did get one tolerance out a little too much and I slip out of reverse, 1st, and 3rd if I'm not careful...
good luck!
