The original speakers in the rear were 5 1/4 coaxials as I recall.
The speakers were mounted on a raised plate which required a smaller hole in the panel and less depth behind the panel.
Don't know what you bought, but if the bare speaker won't fit in the panel cutout that may be why. Local installer may be able to help you out with the install.
The placement of the rear speakers (pointing down) is not optimal for front seat sound. A better upgrade is to add bigger speakers up front, either in the doors or kick panels to replace the 4 inch speakers in the dash.
