Hi, my car is a '87 155 hp turbo with the Borg Warner DW7 automatic transmission. It has approx. 170000 miles on the clock, however the tranny has been changed once mid-life.

My query is as follows: Every time I select position "1" for extra downhill braking power, the tranny makes a loud clunking noise, after which it engages like normal. I never engage the gear if the speed is above 20 km/h, due to mye fear of damaging the tranny. Is the noise normal? Also engaging any gear from neutral produces a bang followed by a slight shudder.

Other than that the tranny behaves great, shifting ever so smooth when in drive. The only annoyance is that the third gear never engages before 60 km/h, meaning a waste of fuel unless i force it up (set to "2" and immediately returned to "D" it shifts up to third). Oil is carefully monitored.

Any ideas?
