Diagnosing Clunk.. bushings, shocks, ball joints, etc?

I have a clunk that comes from my front right wheel well when i go over bumps (more evident if wheel is turned to the left), although i cannot recreate the noise by pushing down on the bumber and shaking the car.
I've take off the wheel and grabbed the rotor/brake mechanism and there doesn't seem to be any movement, so i THINK i've ruled out ball joints (i seem to recall this is the proper way to check these, but if i'm wrong please say so).
I grabbed the shock with my hand (thru the wheel well) and tried to shake it and there was no play there either, and i tried this with the car on the ground as well as with the car on a jack.
I THINK this occurred after i did some work around the brakes, which included moving the caliper mechanism away from the rotors, although i don't know if it happened immediately afterwards so i can't say for certain if there is a direct correlation.
Any suggestions on where to look next, or even better, is anybody located near northern NJ that would be willing to go for a short ride to assist in the diagnosis?
Thanks for any insight.
