If you open the hood and look at the two heater hoses on the firewall you will see an extra loop with a black plastic valve about a foot or so from the firewall.
I recall a post a long time ago, or maybe a tech article somewhere that this thing closes the loop to the heater core when cold to let the engine warm up quicker. But apparently the valves often fail or leak. The gist is to use hoses from an earlier car that don't include the extra loop and valve.
