bad rods (whatever that means) dont cause engines just to lose power and die.. if its a big-end that goes u get a hard knocking which gets worse as load is increased.. with the oil pressure warning light on due to low oil pressure.. this will simply carry on getting louder and louder with no paricular power loss until the rod gets thrown and comes out the side of the block.. a pretty dramatic power loss does occur at this point mind u.. he he he.. i have done it many a time.. during my younger days of course.. i even managed to get an engine to throw its rod with bits of piston.. bent conrod.. u name it in the bottom of the sump.. amazingly enough i still managed to drive the car the remaining forty miles home in that condition.. the overall journey starting with a failed big end was 150 miles it was cheaper to try and get the car home than have it fixed away..
if its a small-end failure.. well again u will get a lighter sounding knock which can go on for thousands of miles with no power loss at all.. small ends never get thrown to my knowledge.. they also dont fail that often either.. especially at the mileage u decribe..
something still dosnt sound quite right with the symptoms u have.. it might be cheaper just to fit another engine.. but i would love to know just what has gone wrong with the one u have.. i doubt its a simple "bad rod" and thats a fact..
