Jim,

The Saab engine is quite strong and durable, however, its the transmissions that seem to be Saab's Achilles heel. Its not just the automatics though.

The automatic is a Borg Warner 37 3-speed. Its quite compact and has seen lots of uses in Eurpoean vehicles. Variations of it have been in use since the 1950s starting in, I believe, Studebakers.

You will see lots of posts on this board knocking automatics. Yes, they will fail if not maintained. Automatics always seem to be neglected on any car and I don't know why. If the car is a turbo, the odds are more likely that it was abused than if it was a normally-aspriated engine. Do you know the owner? Mine is a turbo, but, I never abuse it. I didn't buy the car for speed you know.

If you do maintain the transmission with fluid changes and the filter screen cleaning at regular intervals, you should not have a problem on your hands. In fact, that kind of maintenance is rather easy for the
D-I-Yer. You can find posts on this board of owners with 150-300k on their automatics.

My independent Saab technician believes that given proper care, the automatics are more durable than the manuals. Sure, manuals are more fun if you're not always in bumper-to-bumper traffic, but they are prone to failure too.

If you like the car, find an independent (see the "Frequent Stops" section of this web-site) and have him evaluate the car. Its money well spent.
