Don't feel bad, I had to replace one on my 87 900S when I rounded it off trying to get it off with a 12 point wrench. Be very careful with a hammer under there; the oil pan is cast aluminum. I used a large pipe wrench on the outer flange of the plug to get it off. And always use a 6-point socket or box wrench.
