You can try starting with fan off (right knob on "0"),. but sooner or later you will forget to do this and blow the fuse again. When the car is cold, you have two things working against you:
1. whatever lubrication the motor has is "stiffer", causing higher drag, requiring more power.
2. on startup, the battery voltage is down, requiring more current for the same power (P=VI). More power for the "stiff" motor will require even more current!
The note above about the motor "protecting itself" from too much current with a bimetalic switch could be a possibility, but even if so, the motor is still drawing too much current and will eventually need replacement. Townsend's site has a good diagnostic if you have a high-capacity ammeter (need 30 Amps!).
Blower motor failure is a normal occurance on these cars, especially given their age. Unlike some cars (big old American cars, for example), replacing the motor is a PITA (I just did my '83 a few months ago). The only good news is that a replacement motor is not that expensive - several site sponsors have a new Mexican-made Siemens motor (with fan installed) for $65 - $75. You have to cut the wires and add male lugs to hook up to the existing harness - black is the ground side. Even if it lasts half as long as the original, that's fine - I doubt that I will own this car in ten years!
