87SP: I think that you'll need to get a different wastegate from a different car if you want to run 15-20lbs of boost without APC. You could also probably rig up some type of aftermarket boost control, but in the end its probably easiest to just figure out why your APC isn't working correctly. The APC system in the 900 is really pretty basic, and for the most part, t works really well. That said, doing away with all of it, and just setting your max boost with the rod is also a pretty trouble free setup.
I wouldn't worry about the knock detection, hell my 99t doesn't have it, and I don't really think its all that accurate anyway. I wouldn't worry about the engine. The 16 valve turbo engine takes a lot of abuse. If you ruin it, so what put a different one in. They're like a dime a dozen here in PA.
