Here's the scenario --
Took '92 SAAB (automatic tranny with 125K miles)to the local gas station to have the oil changed. Found out later the station had pulled the plug on the tranny, drained it (didn't flush it) and then topped off the oil.
I drove the car (highway all the way to my vacation site about 500 miles away. No problem. Next day, when I went to put the car in reverse,
I heard a "clunk."

I panicked and had switched to a rental car. I had the SAAB towed
back home. fortunately I had enough "evidence" to get the station to
pay for the damage (one of those global brand operations. Unfortunately,
they are only willing to pay the book value of the car, which I am learning is less than what it is going to cost me to fix my SAAB.

I need some coaching on what to do to determine what to do next in order to
size up the damage done and how best to fix it.

All I have done so far is fill the transmission resevoir up to proper levels. Ifigured the service station had drained between 3 and 4 gallons so I was running very low. Here's what the transmission does now:
First gear is not a problem
Reverse is not a problem
Second seems okay most times
Getting traction out of into 3rd and fourth gears is my problem.
I seem to lose power when the tranny shifts into these
gears. I assume the tranny bands is slipping.

I have read a lot of emails on whether to flush or not to flush when rejuvenating the fluid. I thought it would be worth my while to try
and flush the fluid 4X over the course of a week. I thought I might also
drop the pan and check the filter for "stuff."

I assume there might be some additive I would try to improve the bands
in the hopes I haven't totally destroyed some of them.

Any other suggestions?

Also, is this something that can be repaired or am I better off
looking at a replacement tranny.

Thanks for all the help and coaching in advance.

Frank
