check engine light help!

Hi, I have a problem with a check engine light. The light stays on after car starts. The idle is ok but when I attempt to accelerate it stumbles and has a tremendous loss of power. If I feed the throttle in slowly, the engine will respond and rise in RPM but if I jab the throttle it will stumble hard. I checked all the usual suspects, head temp sensor, all intake rubber, connections to AMM and o2 sensor and all grounds to chassis and engine. All seem ok. Am I missing something? I am especially stumped on this because the car was running great, then I stopped and parked for no more than 30 min, started fine and then the light came on. The car is an 87 turbo with lh 2.2
I disconnected the battery in hopes of resetting the code but this did not work. Could it be the fuel pressure regulator or fuel pump? Would any of these cause the check engine light to stay on? Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
There was also a very strong gasoline odor, may have been running rich.
