I would have no concerns about buying parts from sobstory. Jim has been my primary source for parts for 3 900's over the past 5-6 years. Additionally, he has coached me through my diy adventures and the knowledge that he readily shares makes his prices even more attractive.
Now, regarding the axle. The remanufactured axles will save you alot of time, so you can just install it. If you buy the boot kit, you can save some money, but getting the CV-joint off the axle is a bit tricky. You have to expand a circlip in the joint to slide it off. This can take anywhere from 5 seconds to 15 minutes. Helps to have the planets have to be in alignment. You also need to be careful when you attach the boot clamps to make sure they are square and firmly hooked up. A special pliers or a "dull" end cutter helps for the clamps. Either way, use extreme temp bearing grease for the inner driver lube so that it doesn't melt (mainly on exhaust side). I have had good luck with valvoline synthetic bearing grease.
