I need to replace the pads/caliper on my 1987 900 turbo non-vented brakes...it seems from reading the other posts in the archives that I am not alone in thinking what a pain in the baas this job is .

Ok, so I got the two nuts off the bake of the front drivers side brake. (what size is that nut anyway? An 18mm is too small, 19mm too big, 11/16 too small, 3/4 too big) Anyway after stripping the lower bolt and re-welding a new proper nut on its head, I finally got the caliper off w/o too much fuss. Fine. No prob. Now try and get the new pads in once everything is bolted back up and the lines are alll reconnected..No way.

The outer will not clear the little brace thing at the bottom of the pad receptacle on the caliper. A full 1/8" too big. I tried every combination of installing all 3 components ( both pads and the caliper)to no avail. I fully depressed the piston (carefully) and also measured the clearances from old to new. I was actually able to hammer the new outer pad in place but only after much heavy pounding. I then removed it (after much heavy pounding) b/c I was uncomfortable with how tight the whole thing was. At this point I was willing to forgo the brakes all together and just take my chances..just kidding, ...barely.

The new pads look indenticle to the originals, just thicker. Same with the new caliper. Am I missing something? Is there some correct order of operations that will allow all this to go smoothly? Wrong parts maby? Help!
