I've had the same issue, but I have a 1985 which has the infamous wiring degradation problem. I used to pull out the fuel pump fuse to kill the motor. Check out the wiring in the main loom (draped over the fuel rail) looking for bare wiring. Also check out the ground points for corrosion(crossmember by the battery; under the dash). Replacing the wires in the main loom solved it for me. If you have a Bentley and a voltmeter, there is a diagram describing the ignition switch functions in different positions. Just pull up the center console and test the switch for proper operation. Good luck.
