I've done the same research as i've had a bad hose leak for years on my OC (83 900T). there is oil everywhere on the drivers side from the OC back, but man it really protects the paint in the engine bay and underneath!!!!
one person said i didn't even need the oil cooler, more hassle than it's worth, plus the thermostat in the housing rarely works. made me think - i've never seen that part advertised anywhere if one were to want to replace. so one solution would be to simply bolt on a NA housing.
other people told me simply do what Ed S. said and get a firm to replace the hoses and put it back in.
don't think there are many more options than that....
