NG people were no help...possible cam bearings prob

My boyfriend (the owner of 2 900s from the 80's) suggested I post this here, because we tried posting on the NG board, but got no response. We've always had better luck with the Classic bulletin board for technical stuff anyway....Please read the post below-any advise would be appreciated as I am afraid to drive my car (a 1995 900) because of my boyfriend's predictions of the engine stopping/seizing, and possible irreparable damage. Unfortunately, I need to drive the car to work everyday! We would like to do the repair work ourseleves- and are capable, but we're not really sure what the problem is. Any guesses? Read on...and thanks.
Higher mileage (177k) car, well maintained - engine recently began surging upon cold start up. Lights dimmed, voltage dropped from 14.1v to 12.3v & back again. Alternator ok - suspected air pump seizure/pulled 30a maxi fuse,... symptoms gone, problem solved?...comments appreciated.
NEXT DAY...(yesterday) muffled skreeching/repetitive clicking noise emminating from timing chain side of valve cover (cold start until 10 min. past full warm up)....cam bearings? I've never had cam problems w/prev. Saabs, even after 250+k - so, before I yank the valve cover for a look see (which will quickly turn into yanking the timing chain, cams, etc.... car out of commission, yesch.), I thought someone might have some insight/advice. Thanks
