yes you have to remove it and you have to make the grooved out area longer only if you change the distance between the balls, but you have to shorten the wire only if you shorten the overall length of the shifter, just nip off the extra wire after you are all done after you bent it over on the reverse lock out, when you do it you will understand what I'm saying, yes the directions missed some points but when you are doing it you know what to do when..............M
