Which tool are you talking about? The lever that Bentley shows for manually compressing the pressure plate or the spacer ring?
If it's the first one, you may want to consider unbolting the pressure plate and inserting coins or washers at each bolt hole. You gently pry it up from the pressure plate and put one washer. Then turn the flywheel couterclockwise to get to the next one, etc. You want to be able to bring it up gradually so you don't overstress part of the diaphragm spring and crack it (BTDT on another brand of car). Turning the flywheel will be easier if you remove the spark plugs.
When you've inserted enough washers all the way around that you're able to get the spacer ring into the pressure plate, you're ready to pull the assembly. Pry it up enough to start pulling washers - one at a time, if you can, to evenly relieve the residual pressure in the pressure plate fingers.
If you don't have a spacer ring, get some #6, or thicker, ground ire from a place like Home Despot. If you can get some #8 with insulation, you may be able to avoid copper splinters.
