I assume you are referring to transmission oils.
I had been using the specified 70-weight GL4 gear lube in the transmission of my 1983 900S. My understanding is that this oil is similar viscosity to 10W-30 engine oil, the specified alternative. When I replaced it last fall with 75W-90 gear lube (what could a stinking "5-viscosity points do?"), with similar viscosity to 20W-40, the car was noticeably harder to shift when cold, grinding into second gear the first shift each day. I imagine that 80-weight will be even worse.
Use either 10W30 engine oil or one of the suggested MTLs - however, be forewarned that many people have had catastrophic failures when switching to synthetics - see the archives.
