The Saab temperature gauge does not function like some manufacturers' gauges. Your gauge will move around a lot more than many other cars. This is because many temperature guages are calibrated to stay in one spot even though the coolant temperature changes by several degrees. [My theory is that some car manufacturers create "semi-idiot" gauges so the masses won't complain to their dealers that "something is wrong with their car".] Your Saab gauge is very sensitive and changes rapidly with small changes in the coolant temperature.
My GMC truck gauge rarely moves from one spot, up hill or down, towing or not, hot or cold outside. My 1998 Saab gauge moves very little. My 1991 Saab gauge moves a lot, toward the top on hot days, up hill, etc.; toward the bottom on cold days, coasting down long hills, etc. That is normal! In fact, the coolant of all engines does that. (But the gauges don't show it!]
Personally, I really like the very sensitive nature of C900 gauge. I know my car and can see when problems are developing (radiator, etc.), rather than just detecting them after a major failure.
What is important: 1. If the gauge is more than about 7/8 of the way into the green, you have a problem (thermostat, radiator, water pump, etc.). 2. If the gauge drops to the very bottom of the green (after warm up), your thermostat is bad. 3. Your gauge chronically stays between 1/2 and 7/8 you have a "developing problem" (bad radiator, etc.).
