No heat and climbing temp needle

Being new to 900-dom, I'm not familiar with their circulatory systems. I have a '92 900 non-turbo which has no heat and the temperature needle climbs alarmingly in slow traffic or at idle. At speed, the needle drops to normal.
Is this a thermostat stuck closed? In every other car I'm familiar with, a stuck thermostat wouldn't impede heat. The fan works normally (the usual suspect when temp drops at speed), and besides, fan malfunction wouldn't hurt the heat. The only other thing I can think of is waterpump failure. But I'm hoping to hear it's the thermostat.
