Did you buy the car from a dealer? If so, maybe some sort of remedy is available through them. I've been on both sides of this situation (search my previous posts to see how those situations worked out). If you bought the car from a private party, perhaps you can try to convince them to try and do the right thing.
If you're on your own however, and you're determined to fix this car, the only thing I can suggest at this point that would seem practical is to try and find a motor/trans combo (one from a rear end wreck for example) from a bone yard. A reasonable shop should probably charge around 800-900 to take your old powertrain out and put in the replacement. That is assuming that the junkyard already removed the one from a wreck. That price is based on 8 hours of labor + shop materials. I would tend to think that you should be able to find a used motor/trans. combo for around 600. Either way, you're looking at least 1500 bucks.
The last 900 I bought was an '88 SPG. I paid 1500 for it back in July. So the other possibility is to wait for a similarly priced car and buy it. If you have the space for it, your '91 could make an excellent parts car.
The summary unfortunately, is that with any used car, Saab or otherwise, you never know what type of problems could develop. Saabs are great cars, but as you have found out, the transmissions have historically been their achilles heal. Even if you decide to give up on this car, I sincerely hope that you don't give up on Saabs in general. Good Luck !!!
