I bought a Turbo Conv that had a burned valve. About 30% of one of the exhaust valves was broken off.
Instead of fixing the head, I just pulled a head off a 900 S model that appeared to had led a mellow life before it was wrecked. The valves were in great shape, I just swapped over the intake cam and lifters from the turbo and cleaned off the gasket surface and bolted it on. It worked like a charm. The head costs about $100 from a yard, although I got the entire engine and trans for only $125.
My theory was that a 900S head with 87 k miles had experienced much less thermal stress then a turbo head with 179k miles. The car has been running well for 6 months.
Return to your situation...If the boost was high enough to crack the pistons (and I've never seen that happen myself...) then I'm thinking the entire bottom end of the engine is suspect. If you fix the pistons, you might get 5 k miles before you find THE NEXT week part...a broken rod, broken crankshaft, spun bearings.
These bottom ends really are bullet proof. So, if yours has taken a bullet...get an engine out of a wreck.
Good luck!
